چکیده

The observation has been made repeatedly that the induced synthesis of many different enzymes can be inhibited by a wide variety of carbohydrates (Benzer, 1953; Cohn, 1957, 1958; Epps and Gale, 1942; Gale, 1943; Happold and Hoyle, 1936; Herzenberg, 1958; Monod, 1941, 1947, 1956; Monod and Cohn, 1952; Neidhardt and Magasanik, 1956). One of the most characteristic and potent of these carbohydrate inhibitors is glucose. As a result the general phenomenon has been called the glucose effect (Cohn, 1956; Cohn and Monod, 1953). During an investigation of the glucose effect, it was observed that under certain conditions a remarkable situation arose: two bacterial populations of identical genotype growing under identical conditions could be maintained indefinitely with different phenotypes; one population produced f3-galactosidase whereas the other did not (maintenance). Furthermore, a heterogeneity with respect to the induced synthesis of ,B-galactosidase simulating genetic differences could be provoked within a growing population of otherwise identical cells. An investigation of maintenance as well as of heterogeneity in the ",B-galactoside-enzyme system" under conditions of low inducer concentration has been described by Novick and Weiner (1957). The Novick-Weiner effect and the one to be analyzed here prove to be aspects of the same situation. Our studies will be described in three papers.

Modified Vero cell induced by Bifidobacterium bifidum inhibits enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 cytopathic effect

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), such as E. coli O157:H7, are emerging food-borne pathogens worldwide. This micro-organism can damage the epithelial tissue of the large intestine. The cytotoxic effects can be neutralized by probiotics such as Bifidobacterium bifidum. Probiotics are viable cells that have beneficial effects on the health of the host. The preventing activity of B. bifid...

Establishment of molybdeum cofactor detection system in Escherichia coli

In the current study, in order to verify the presence of bacterial Molybdenum cofactor, an indirect approach was made by showing the activity of BisC enzyme as a reporter gene. The activity of the BisC enzyme is dependent to Bis-MGD cofactor. BisC enzyme converts biotin sulfoxide to biotin under abiotic stress condition and it can also reduce TMANO and because of this property it was applied on...

The Effect of Exogenous Energy Sources on the Synthesis of β-Galactosidase in Resting-Cell Suspensions of Escherichia coli

Using methyl-1-thio-beta-D-galactoside as the inducer, the biosynthesis of beta-galactosidase was observed in Escherichia coli B with only endogenous sources of nitrogen and energy available. The addition of glucose, ribose, xylose, or glycerol as exogenous energy sources to nitrogen-deficient media blocked enzyme formation. Preinduction of the resting cells failed to overcome inhibition by the...

Repression of @Galactosidase Synthesis by Glucose in Phosphotransferase Mutants of Escherichia coli

Glucose and a-methyl glucoside repress P-galactosidase synthesis in wild type Escherichia coli and in mutant strains deficient in Enzyme I or in the heat-stable protein of the phosphoenolpyruvate-phosphotransferase system. Although the mutants do not grow on glucose and accumulate only a small amount of a-methyl glucoside, they are more sensitive to repression by these compounds than are their ...
